Simple CSS….I thought

Hi, 1st time post hope you can help and thanks in advance.

So I am i playing with CSS and LavaLamp following the tutorial on this site to create the menu at the top of the page (the one with the nice orange bg ? ) [url]http://www.gmarwaha.com/blog/2007/08/23/lavalamp-for-jquery-lovers/[/url] I thought i had followed the tutorial 100% and still can’t see where I have gone wrong but the background would not come up [yes i have copped the images and added them to my testing server]. All i get is a menu with the moving orange blob beneath it.

I investigate a little further using firebug [firefox] and chrome’s built in code tool and find that none of the information I have included in the CSS HERE section is

}
//or
.lavaLamp ul{
CSS HERE
}

being looked at and there is no reference to it in the browser, its like this code is not been written at all. So I delete it, and the LavaLamp stops working altogether showing the ul as an old fashioned ul.

However it works (without the bg of course ? ) with any tag in the css

[CODE] .BigPIG{}[/CODE]

or even just

[CODE] .{}[/CODE]

which baffles me! If anyone can let me know where I am going wrong, and or why the code still partially works with code in it that seems to do nothing I would be very great-full!
