CSS Ordered List Start Number

I am working with Blackboard 9.1 trying to setup a nested ordered list. Blackboard does not support the normal nesting of ordered lists. Instead of nesting, I was attempting to end the first level list, then use inline CSS where I set the style with list-style-type: lower-alpha; for the nested part. After the nested items, start another ordered lists, but I would need to set a start value. I see the type= and start= attributes of the ol tag are deprecated. Is there an alternative to setting up a start value for the list? W3Schools states to use styles instead for a start value, but then does not tell how to code that in CSS. Any ideas? Thanks
