preg_split regular expression question

I have some data that I need to split by a colon. Some of the fields are surrounded by quotes so that there can be colons in the field. What regular expression would I use to split the string by the colon but ignore colons that are within quotes?

Example –

$str = ‘1:”here is some text: some text”:other stuff:even more’;
$pattern = ?;

$array = preg_split($pattern, $str);

echo $array[0]; // 1
echo $array[1]; // here is some text: some text
echo $array[2]; // other stuff
echo $array[3]; // even more

Thank you in advance!
