anchor tag frame attribute

I am working on setting up an online course in Blackboard CMS. When I create web pages I setup external hyperlinks to open in a new window in which I use <a href target=”_blank”>. However when I create a hyperlink in Blackboard to open in an external window the code is <a href target=”_new”>. I do see that at W3C, the attribute value should be “_blank” and “_new” is not listed. Is using the “_new” valid code? And will it work across multiple browsers? I have done some searching on this and cannot find a clear cut answer.

Thanks

@FangDec 18.2010 — It's an invalid value, but afaik will open a new window or tab, provided the used has not changed the browser option to open links in the same window.
