Copyright Protect Content

I work for a certain print and online publication. The one problem we have is other sites copying ad pasting our content to thier own websites or blogs. Wondering if theirs some way to allow a user to only to be able to copy/paste a certain character limit and then somehow add link to copied and pasted blurb?

Maybe theirs a way to use javascript to command their notepad to only allow a set number of characters….

MAybe theirs a service available…

@WolfShadeNov 03.2010 — To the best of my knowledge, there is no way to prevent people from copying what is on a web page. If you do manage to find a way of doing it with JavaScript, all someone has to do is disable JavaScript in the browser. Even if you disable "View Source", someone will find a way to view the source.

Unfortunately, I think the only option you have is to occasionally search with Google using the content as keywords placed between double-quotes. If you find that another site has copied the material, use a WHOIS to find the registered owner of the domain and send an email asking them to remove the content. If they don't (or if they don't respond), send another email using the word litigation.

If they are in another country, your options are limited.

The links winracer posted are not even close to being ways around it.

Encrypting the HTML source does nothing when the text is right in front of you on the browser for you to highlight. Likewise, who cares if you have some stupid no right click script installed when all I need to do is highlight the text and push CTRL+C.

There's no sensible solution to prevent this....but in terms of completely outrageous solutions you could make all your text an image......?

or a Flash swf file ? But that will not meet the requirements. The OP wants to permit the copy paste of a limited fragment of text, no matter from which character as start. I think that is impossible, as far as my actual knowledge are. Maybe in Flash could be possible, but I would not bet. ?

sorry,

I did not mean these links were ways around it. I just ment here are some things to try to make it a little harder for someone to still the HTML source code. I also ment that they are ways around any of these links that I posted.

P.S.

also you can read "Wondering how to hide your source code?" http://www.webdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26841

on the sticky thread that says "Wondering how to hide your source code?" "Well, give up right now then, because it is absolutely impossible. "

@KorNov 03.2010 — To: Ctierney and winracer - there is a famous saying: "The locks are made for honest people". Those who don't need that text and don't want to steal it, they will simply keep away and respect the copyright, regardless their skill in programming. Those who want to copy that text by all means, they will either have the knowledge, or they will hire people who know how to do that.

Wasting of time. Any piece of information published and visible on the Internet is a subject of copy/paste, a way or another. No way to prevent that, so far.

Note: I have experienced that "lock issue" when I was in the Army (at that time in my country all the youngsters were subjects of compulsory recruitment). Some of my brother in arms who were both wealthy and greedy, had often the surprise of suffering various small theft within their belongings, even locked (food, cigarettes...). For me, I didn't even have a lock on my belongings (cupboard or suitcase), as I used to shared all my goodies with my mates. You know what? No one dared to steal from me not even one cigarette, even there was no lock to prevent that. I have considered the lock as a supplementary stress factor for me. They knew that if I have enough, I will give anyone at will. If not, they really have respected my privacy.

Well, it is not quite the same thing, but I hope this will make you understand what I mean.

Done. Same position: Without a server-side trick (or a watermark) all the images published on web are eligible of copy/paste.

Anyway, as an axiom: it is not JavaScript the language which can protect/hide/cover/watermark something. JavaScript was meant for other scopes.

@rootFeb 16.2014 — Its a basic rule of thumb, if it aint out there then its not going to be take...

The purpose of the internet is to properly set up your web pages so that the content you offer is too low grade for others to use but good for your site's look, etc.

As for images, I generally take an image, crop it to what I want in actual size, so if its a 500 x 800 pixel and I only need a 200 x 300 pixel image, I crop it to that size, then I will further reduce the image data by lowering the DPI to minimum of 72 dpi so images look good but you can't upscale, then compress the images by saving them as jpg files with a compression level of not less than 79.

The result is a very small image file.

Then.. To stop simple copy and paste, use a double glazing method, that is using a transparent PNG file that is then displayed on top of an image to stop right clicking.

You can do this in CSS, use an empty place holder where your image is to appear in the page, use CSS to set that image, z-index it to be below a transparent window.

So not if someone wants to save your image, they have to go in to your site code and find its path reference. Simply right clicking and saving will result in a transparent image!

Success!
