Inserting word templates in html

Can anyone help me, i am trying to do a link in html to open up word templates .dot files when the user clicks on the link. Opening .doc links are fine but .dot do not seem to be opening automatically. The only option given is to save file to disk which i do not want. I would be grateful if anyone could help me out.

@LoopyLouauthorDec 17.2003 — yes because this would change the file from being a template to an ordinary word document which could be overwritten by all the users. Im trying to set up simple templates on the intranet for users to select and enter their own information and then save without affecting the original template.
