Advice needed please !

Hi there,
I’ve been a web developer for 6+ years now using vb.net, sql server, AJAX, javascript etc. etc.
Ashamedly – I’ve ever had my own website and I’m thinking about putting one together – just to store my own code and perhaps make some kind of portfolio. Maybe even store some photos on it – nothing huge or amazingly experimental needed.
So, I’m hoping you guys & girls can point me in the right direction or give me some idea of the steps I need to take to get this into life.
I’ll need to be able to :
•

    get a domain name

  •

ftp my files to the host server

  •

    run .net framework

  •

    use sql server 2005+

  •

run ajax tools on my site

  •
So, I’m almost completely in the dark with this stuff (embarrassingly !) Every company I’ve worked for already has this stuff set up!

Do I need to buy s domain name and then use that name with a host or do I get the name from the hosting company I choose ?

Anyway – it should be apparent the level of help I’m after…
All help and advice is greatly appreciated.

@tracknutSep 22.2010 — You get a domain name from a registrar - there are a million. You get hosting from a hosting service, this is a second step - there are also a million. Many companies will do both hosting and registration, you just need to ensure that the domain is actually registered to *you* and not someone at the hosting company (i.e. a "whois" on your domain should list you as the registrant, not someone else). Key to you is to find a hosting service that provides .net and sql server, which of course you should verify before you purchase. A hosting service will tell you what comes with Unix hosting (probably not for you) or Windows hosting (probably what you're looking for).

Once you've picked a host and registered the domain name, you "point" the domain to your host's dns servers. This is something done at the registrar, and is what makes www.yourdomain.com actually connect to a web server that will eventually have your html and such files on it. And then last of all you ftp your files to your host.

Many hosts and registrars will support what you're asking for, check godaddy.com for example.

    @wotneyauthorSep 23.2010 — Dave, that's great. Thanks very much.

So I've got my domain name from GoDaddy - they seemed reasonably easy to use and looked reputable too. Cheers !

Can you recommend a decent hosting company ?

GoDaddy seem to offer the service I need, but it's £3.20 per month - is that reasonable ? it seems like a lot of money for a site that will be used only by me, but if that's the going rate, then so be it...

    Thanks again ?

@tracknutSep 23.2010 — No worries. I use godaddy for all my domains and my hosting. They're one of the cheapest around, virtually no down-time, and good service. There are many other good ones too, I just happen to be with them.
