Google indexing site without "www"

Hi Guys, not sure if this is the right section. Im having a few problems with Google ranking this site www.advanceguardrail.com

Site search with www

site search without www

Google seems to be indexing http://advanceguardrail.com (omitting the www) which stops the site from appearing in the rankings.

A while a go i added an .htaccess redirect to force it to go to the www but google still havent ranked it.

Is there anyway to stop this happening as it’s now happened on another domain. ( www.nottinghamdrainage.com)

Any help much appreciated!

@svidgenSep 17.2010 — You can actually configure how google sees your site--with or without the assumed www subdomain. http://www.google.com/webmasters/

Once you've signed in and followed the instructions to verify that you are the site owner ...
•
select your domain from the list, if applicable

  •
expand the Site Configuration menu

  •
click Settings

  •
select the "Display URLs as www.<yourdomain>" in the Preferred domain section

  •
From the same area, you can also adjust the rate at which google crawls and indexes your site, which could also be part of the issue. And in general, you can see an overview of how your site is being crawled and indexed.

    Thanks for the reply. I've tried the above but i keep getting this message;

"Part of the process of setting a preferred domain is to verify that you own http://advanceguardrail.com/. Please verify http://advanceguardrail.com/."

I already uploaded the meta data and verified the site so i don't understand why its asking me this. Any ideas?

MMM, very strange. Originally I'd submitted the url www.advanceguardrail.com and verified it.

So i re-submitting the url without the www then verified it again, then went into settings and now it allows me to change the display url etc.

Very strange, but i think that has fixed it.

    Thanks guys!!! ?

@taobaofocusSep 21.2010 — be sure also you have a correct www redirect to avoid google seeing the same content twice.

@svidgenSep 21.2010 — Glad you got it working.

@deepakgOct 14.2010 — you can also redirect your website by 301 redirect code through .htaccess file from your server. Most of the SEO Webmasters implement this thing to save the website from penalty.
