When I am developing a web page should I take into account older browser versions?
For instance I am developing www.jackpotconnection.com for a friend. I had another friend take a look at it and it looked horrible! Come to find out he was using IE 6.
I am new to developing so was wondering what the rule of thumb is (if thier is one)
@Declan1991Sep 14.2010 — #The general rule of thumb is to try to have it not fall apart in all browsers, and look good in the most common modern browsers. That depends on your audience. If you are targeting people in companies, they might be using old versions because they cannot update them themselves. Also, it's pretty likely that Firefox, Opera and Chrome users will update them regularly, so don't worry too much about old versions of them.

You have to have access to multiple computers - a Windows computer, a Mac, an iPhone, an iPad, etc. and test various browsers on each platform.
I have an iMac and Windows netbook, and an iPod touch. I ask friends that have iPads and iPhones to take a look at a site when they get a chance. I think I need to get an iPad because I think that's an important platform to support (hehe business expense?).
