FTP File Browse Window

Hi folks,

Sure this is really simple, but I guess I’m not googling the right term?

Basically, I have tweaked a script, to allow our members to upload image files to a specified directory on our web hosting.

I would like them to be able to view “only” this specified directory to see the files they have uploaded.

Is there a way to do this?

Kind Regards,
Cal ?

@Eye_for_VideoAug 31.2010 — Most hosting services provide a "Public FTP" folder which you can set a username and password for and give that info out to anyone you want to give access to just that folder.

When you view the site in your FTP program, you'll see all the folders, including the "Public" folder (given whatever name you choose)

Check with your host on exact details for setting this up.

Best wishes,

@savvykmsSep 01.2010 — You could always just set up FTP to use an Apache directory off of www or htdocs (depending on installation/os). As long as directory listing is enabled if no default index document is found, it will serve the images up to web browsers. In this respect, you can have it publicly visible or restrict it using password protection on the directory, via .htaccess.

If that doesn't work, most FTP servers have permissions systems in place, which would allow you to set global permissions, permissions for individual directories, and permissions for simply files. If on a *nix OS, try chmod and chown if applicable.

@CalmanauthorSep 01.2010 — Hi guys,

Thanks so much for the feedback.

I don't have a lot of knowledge on this side of things, so step by steps are very valuable in knowing which way to go.

Along the lines that "Eye for Video" described above ... I spoke with our hosting technical support and they suggested the "Public FTP" route, while setting up FTP accounts via the Cpanel.

My only issue with that being, our members would have to run an FTP client, which seems a lot of hassle to go through, simply to allow access (or visual aid) of a specific configured directory.

My basic goal here, is to allow members to upload images to a specified directory (already in place) ... then afterwords, they can browse a specific sub directory with "only" their own images.

If this helps, we run a yearly hosting package with Host Monster, so the usual cpanel features are available to us.

Kind Regards,

Cal ?

@savvykmsSep 01.2010 — You could probably find a CMS (content management system) to fit your needs, or have one made (or make it yourself). Also: if the employees use microsoft windows, most versions of microsoft OSes (that i know of) contain a built-in FTP client via both Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer. I believe Firefox also supports FTP and I have a feeling that every major web browser does.

@CalmanauthorSep 01.2010 — Interesting!

We have these packages available on our "simple scripts" section.

MODx 2.0.0-pl

Joomla1.5.20 Popular

Drupal 6.19 Popular

e107 0.7.23

Mambo4.6.5

XOOPS2.4.5

PHP-Nuke8.0

phpwcms 1.4.5

Any particular one I should be checking out? ... bearing in mind, I only need a simple system to allow our members to view their uploaded images/photos.

Kind Regards,

Cal ?
