How should I let visitors coming from Google know what my website is for?

It just occurred to me that a new visitor who came to my website for the first time will probably have no idea what my website is for. How should I notify the visitor what my website is for? Should I put a red banner on top or create a popup, etc? Thanks in advance!

P.S. My website for users to submit links or articles. The links can be backlinks to their website, the articles can contain links back to their site. Visitors will not take advantage of my website unless they know what it’s for.

How's this? Would it violate Adsense's TOS or something? I couldn't find a better place to put it.

@Eye_for_VideoSep 01.2010 — Hey what's up dude?

Your thread title says they are coming from Google, which means they already asked for specific information. Yet your post says:
a new visitor who came to my website for the first time will probably have no idea what my website is for
If the purpose of your site is so convoluted that viewers coming from Google
will probably have no idea
then it's time you invest in a little SEO (Search Engine Optimization) effort. That's how Google gets the info to send the viewer your way.

Take a tip from our Speech Club, have a "Specific Purpose Statement" in which your locution detailing your site should be in deed "Specific".

Best wishes,

I looked at linksku.com and couldn't see any obvious statement about what it's about or how to use it.

@tipmanNov 12.2010 — I think adding a Pop up is a bad idea because in nowadays Web Browsers Block them. So you should think about any other thing.

And i found site when i was searching the net via Google. Here it is,

this site that offers a free webcam chat script (similar to chatroulette). it's very simple to add to your site, you just have to copy and paste a few html lines ... check it out: http://faceflow.com/chatroulette-clone-script

Adding a Chat Script like this would add more interaction to your site. And you can Chat with People when you are free too.

Thanks
