What is needed for a blog?

I am currently wanting to start a blog but I am not sure where to start coding.

As easy as it would be to download and learn wordpress i would like to develop it from the ground up. While i do want a blog, i want more to have a new coding project and experience.

I know you need a page built with html/css maybe some javascript but what else. I have tried googling “how to code a blog” and like phrases but everything wants to set it up for me or use wordpress.

I am ok in html and css; i am always improving my skills. i know some javascript and php. what else do i need to be familiar with to start coding a blog? MySQL?

i think the way a blog works is you have a database set up and displayed on the page as entries.

i am hoping someone can link to a good place to start or explain where i need to start. i know it’s not very detailed and i it is kind of a big undertaking but how else do you learn.

thanks to all who are willing to help me out.

@aj_nscAug 26.2010 — MySQL and PHP - or at least some database system and some server side language to communicate with the database - are at least as essential as the html/css part.

google for tutorials. there are some rather quick and simple 3-4 part tutorials out there that can probably get you up and running in a day or two once you have your design developed.

@spotted_zebraauthorAug 26.2010 — yea i continued to google after i posted this and found some good stuff; just had to wade through all the adverts for people who "just want it to work".

i am reviewing php at w3schools right now but i know basically how to code it is more the specific operations for a language that i don't know.

thanks for the help and if anyone has more insight please let me know.

@handcraftedwebAug 29.2010 — Do you want to code your own blog from the ground up?

I'd advise you to NOT do that because so much development today is taking a body of existing software and extending/modifying it. I'd say to take Wordpress and extend it is a more valuable experience than to create your own blog platform, and it can be as in depth and challenging as you want to take it.

I understand the desire to build something of your own, but most engineers would rather take advantage of the leverage of building on top of a proven platform and not reinvent the wheel.

Just my 2 cents.

@diyakapoorSep 08.2010 — If you know php and mysql and then you can very well understand the functioning of a blog. Just check working/functionality of any wordpress blog on internet and you can make a complete analysis for all the modules required. and then start building/coding for it
