[RESOLVED] Problem with Javascript terminology

I’m trying to work out how a dashboard works and I keep stumbling across this terminology

$.blockUI.defaults.css.left = ‘40%’;

What is “$.” ? Is it this window object or something ?

$ could be set to anything like an object or a function.

@jackd1000authorAug 19.2010 — So '$' is actually a legitimate variable name ?
