Need help with getting a jQuery-based menu to work

Hi, all

If you’ll visit this page, you’ll see what I’m working on.

All of the CSS and JavaScript is in the Web page, so you can see everything affecting what’s being rendered on the page.

I’m nearly done, but I need to accomplish two things:

1)
When you mouse-over the top-level links you’ll notice that the background color change is only getting applied to the <a> tag in the link – not the <li> tag the anchor is in. In an attempt to fix that you’ll notice the styling:
#mainMenu li:hover,
#mainMenu li a:hover { background: #1C5B87; }
But that doesn’t work. You’ll also see a javascript attempt at that by toggling a .hover class (no longer in the <style> tag), but that didn’t work either.

2)
The other thing I want to do is to get the mouse to be a regular pointer when the three middle items are moused-over. They don’t link to anything, so I’d rather not have the cursor be a hand, if that can be accomplished.

Thanks for anyone’s help!
