Float Issues: Internet Explorer 7 SUCKS

I don’t know where this question should go so I am putting it in here for now.

Why in Internet Explorer 7 does the shadows appear vertically on top of each other? This site has been tested and works in every major desktop browser except IE 7 and under.

@FangMay 16.2010 — Try removing the xml decaration, it puts IE7 into quirks mode.

@AlanJames1987authorMay 16.2010 — After reading your reply I removed the xml declaration and noticed no difference. I then removed the doctype declaration and it worked. This however does not seem like a good think to do, however I am not sure.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a doctype? I know most but if someone could restate them I would appreciate it.
