is there a way to make a background image scale in size?

I have the following code, and I want to make the headerslige.png image scale up or down in size:

<div id=”header” style=”background-image: url(‘images/headerslice.png’); background-repeat:no-repeat; height:257px; ” >
</div>

Any suggestions?

But it uses an image instead of a background image--fine, works and all, but I have a 1px high slice that I want to have repeat vertically..

any way to do that?
