Usability in a pdf/doc preview pop-up

Hi,
I’m working on a webapp where the user is shown a “Preview document” link.

The javascript in the link is a simple window.open(‘http://url’,’newImageWin’,’toolbar=no,width=400, height=300)
where the url can be a image, pdf, doc or docx file.

The problem arises in PDF or Word files:
In browsers that have the appropriate preview add-ons the PDF is opened nicely for viewing inside the pop-up.
However – browsers that dont have this, show the Open/Save dialog in a blank pop-up, that is left open after the user’s done with the file-dialog.

The behavior I’d like best:
– opens nicely when the user browser supports preview
– no preview support: closes automatically after the file dialog.

Any ideas? will really appreciate your help.

@FangApr 26.2010 — Which browser leaves a blank popup open? In tests I did the popup is closed automatically when the file dialog opens.
