DIV>> Removing part of the usual DIV box?

How do you code a layout that doesn’t have an exact BOX for the content?
For example,
The DIV is usually a BOX, right?
How do you remove a box shaped part of that?
So the result would be 2 different boxes joined together as a DIV.
Like so..

| |
| |

I just want a part of it out because that contains a picture from the layout and there shouldn’t be text over it.

PLEASE HELP.
