As far as the initial form submission, other tricks include having a form field which is not displayed (via CSS settings) which, if not empty when submitted, indicates a 'bot; and generating a random value which is stored in a session variable and set as the value of a hidden form field, then verifying that it matches the value in $_SESSION when the form is submitted. I've used these two techniques together on email forms without a captcha with good success.

Im working on a social community that accepts only a set of verified email adresses in order for the registration verification email to be sent.
