CSS: Background-Color/Transparency?

Hey all, well here’s the problem. I’ve been creating a webpage for a project and i’ve centered a wrapper <div> allowing for two margins on either side. however i feel as though that the wrapper <div> could use some color, but i find this to be a little over powering when declaring the ‘background-color:’ property. is there anyway that i can set a transparency percentage so the body background image is visble through the wrapper <div>. i’ve already tryed transparent: 50%; however with no luck.

cheers
