How can I count the individual item ??

Hi,
I have this data base.. with dogs,cats and hamster etc..

How can I count individually like counting cats only.. I know I can count by rows only.. but how can i count by individual? Thanks..

table called “pet”
id name type
1 Park Dog
2 Puddy Cat
3 Mary Cat
4 Jacky Dog
5 Sweety Hamster
6 Gigi Cat
