Need career advice

I am building a web design portfolio, I want to get atleast five clients freelancing before I apply to design companies to put in my portfolio, to give me more of a realistic chance of getting a web design job.

Currently I know Dreamweaver, Photoshop and abit of flash, and I’m good at interface design. The main gaps I have are the technical side, such as coding.

What essential skills should I have that would get me a job in web design?

Should PHP, Javascript, actionscript be at the top?

@aj_nscFeb 03.2010 — You never mentioned CSS and HTML, maybe they're just so obvious that you didn't think them worth mentioning, or maybe you're just a photoshop designer. If you want to be a web designer, know CSS/HTML and cross browser incompatibilities to the finest detail. I wouldn't worry a whole lot about PHP for a design position, but you might want to be familiar with it so you can tell what coders are doing with your designs when you look at the source. Actionscript is high on the list, as a designer who knows flash, to bring your flash skills to the next level. Good idea to have a good working knowledge, if not expertise, with Javascript as well for design positions.
