disable a function

Philosophical question.

I have a small function that changes form data on an onclick event. If I want to cancel that what is the best way. One way that works is to remove the id reference from the target id. (using PHP) It works fine but causes a Javascript error.

The error is “document.getElementById(“someid”) is null”

I tried to make the form item readonly but Javascript is apparently exempt from that.
