Server crashing- why??

Hi

Can anyone tell me common reasons as to why servers crash? My code is fine, although it is executing some pretty hardcore code. It basically scans a remote URL for hex colours and also scans any logo images found, pixel by pixel, for the most common colours.

Despite this it used to be fine, but now the server just crashes if it’s a tricky URL or other programs are using the internet connection bandwidth.

What’s causing this? Would a time-out on the script help or what are the best ways round this sort of crash? Is my PHP set-up just crap and need a new installation of Apache?
