DNS Query – SOA

So company A hosts my site, lets call it example.com, but I have dns nameservers provided by company B (historic arrangement). My sites are down and an NSLOOKUP on example.com shows no records (no A or SOA).

Company B who manage my DNS tell me the nameservers are fine and the issue is going to be with company A who hold the SOA.

Is that right? I thought that the zone file would be on the primary name server of the company that manages my dns?

thanks
Graham
