How to remove empty space around table?

Please take a look at the below page.

The middle has a table slice. The right and left are plain black background.

How can I get rid of those empty spaces that outline the table? Also around the border of the page. I have all the margins set to zero.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Ron

@Eye_for_VideoDec 04.2009 — Hey Ron!

Do you ever use IE Developer Toolbar?

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=e59c3964-672d-4511-bb3e-2d5e1db91038&displaylang=en

The reason I ask is because when I view your page with IE Dev Toolbar, It shows a 1 px padding used around a couple of elements. Looks like you have a white body background color, which could show through if there was padding.

A quick test for padding would be to change the body background color to green and see if any shows thru.

Anyway, I'll attach a screen shot of what I see. Follow the tree down to isolate which <td>s have padding, there's 2 of them.

Also, there is no DOCTYPE declared at the top of the page, so it may be causing problems in browsers (like adding in default padding). Validate your page here:

Best wishes Ron!

The w3schools does not validate anything, not even their own pages. It has no connection to the W3 consortium, and often gives incorrect advice.

Use the validator at http://validator.w3.org.

@Eye_for_VideoDec 06.2009 — Hey cfa!

Did you even check the link? w3schools happens to use a very reputable source to validate pages... and I guess you could also say that at least in one respect they do have a connection to W3C, see attached photo of validation service used by w3schools....

From one Johnson to another...Peace Brother!

Best wishes,

EfV

They have links to the W3C validation pages; anyone can have that on their web pages (I think I will, too, before long, and I'll make it clear that they are not mine).

They have something which claims to "Validate your XML files with Internet Explorer", whatever that means. IE is not a validator, and I wouldn't trust it with anything.

@Eye_for_VideoDec 06.2009 — The point of the original post was to find how to remove white space around a table. I offered a reasonable suggestion, it’s padding, and added that there was no DOCTYPE declared. Perhaps that was also causing problems, so validate the code. The link I posted would have returned the exact same validation errors that the link you posted would have. The w3schools page clearly states, “Validate your HTML files with W3C” and “Validate your XHTML files with W3C” so what’s the beef?

Whatever issues you have with w3schools is none of my business. I was merely trying to help a fellow Web Developer with his specific problem.

Best wishes,

EfV
