Hello,
How much importance do the keywords in the domain itself have as far as seo? I am not talking about keyword stuffed several keywords domains, just two word domains with one or two keywords…

@Joseph_WitchardNov 23.2009 — I did a Google search for "hogwarts rpg", and the top five sites listed had at least one of those words in the domain name. There are other factors that determine how well your site will rank, but having a good domain name is a definite bonus. If you played for a band in Mississippi and the band name was "the rockin' rebels", people are more likely to do a google search for "mississippi rock band" than "rockin' rebels". Therefore, you might want to make your domain name "mississippi-band.com" rather than "rockin-rebels.com".

@ketancoauthorNov 23.2009 — can the reason be the title of the web page containing those keywords? because i know the title of the page is important for google. i am not talking about the user point of view here. i know the keyword domain is better from the user point of view because it is more easily rememmebred. but technically for search engine point of view only, i wasnt sure if it is the title of the web page that matters or the domain name itself. for instance given everything being the same between two websites, everything you can think of 100%, would a domain with keywords perform better in comparison to a domain without keywords. from what you are saying the answer seems to be yes...

@tracknutNov 23.2009 — I am certainly no SEO expert, but FWIW I found no reference in http://www.google.com/webmasters/docs/search-engine-optimization-starter-guide.pdf to the selection of a domain name being relevant to your SEO ranking at Google.

@Joseph_WitchardNov 23.2009 — Me either, so take my advice with a grain of salt. However, that's what I've heard, and it makes sense to me.

Yes, the title of the page is real important. Put the keywords before the name of your site in the title. If you were starting a basic web design tutorial site, your title might be something like "HTML and CSS Tutorials - YOURWEBSITENAME".

This is one of the tutorials I follow, so you might want to have a look at that?

@Trent_BrownriggDec 02.2009 — Getting an exact match domain name will certainly help. You can often find exact match domains ranking in the top 10 even though they have a LOT less backlinks and content than the rest of the top 10.

Thanks for answer but I didn't understand the above statement. Do you mean even if they might be undeveloped they rank high?

Yes, a site with very little content or backlinks will often rank high if they have an exact match domain.

For example, bluewidgets.com might rank in the top 10 for Blue Widgets with only one page of content and just a few backlinks even though all the other sites in the top 10 for Blue Widgets have loads of content and tons of backlinks.

@SyCoDec 02.2009 — It used to help SEO, then spammers registered domains like
i-want-to-be-number-one-in-the-world.com
and it's SEO value was reduced.

Some sites rank high because they always have, and have since the SEO benefits of the domain ranked them well. Because they ranked well, they generated backlinks and so were regarded as relevant sites for those keywords. That relevant aspect and history is why they still rank well.

If you want to rank well for "loony tune cartoons" you can have a domain of myFirstTeaset.com and still be number one, the name is not relevant as it once was. The simple answer to rule the SEO world these days is generating fresh relevant content. If you want to rank well get a blog, post regularly and stay on target. There is no shortcut to generating your content. It takes time and effort or you'll have to pay someone to do it.

Google key word suggestion tool is very handy. I typically use it to generate a list of words I want to rank well for and then write a blog post and tick off the words as I use them. Repetition doesn't help, choosing your phrasing carefully can (for quoted searches). Check your referrals from the search engines and see what people are searching for when they come to your site.

This can work very quickly. I chose a phrase that I wanted to get a good result for. I chose a realistic search term that I had a chance to rank well for and would still generate a decent amount of traffic. All based on the keyword analysis tools at Google. I added a blog, made a few posts, linked to blog to face book and twitter (so it auto posts across) and my result in Google went from nowhere to result #3 in about 3 weeks, now I'm #1 for my target search and generating good business from Google alone. I was about to spend on Google ads but now I don't have too!

Success!
