yes... well im sure none of these posts are really for this or any thread that should be on these forums. the thread is about how many men or women there are... we are just posting our (excluding me and pyro) hatred for women.
"Donating of Thermite" to every owner of an suv... and let's donate it right on top of the hood... that way it the acid eats through the roof.. the engine... the axle... and their driveway... mayby hitting a gas line or two on it's way to the center of the earth..
(ok... thermite isnt strong enough to get to the center of the earth... but a quarter sized bit of it would definately go 30 ft down after eating through the car...)
Umm... yeah.
With 5 grams (approx. the weight of a quarter), you'd be lucky to eat through the hood, much less eating through the entire car and 30 ft. of dirt.
First of all, thermite is not an acid, so it won't "eat" through anything. It will probably melt through the hood, though. The thermite mixture normally used is aluminium powder and iron oxide. When thermite is heated, it starts a reaction that will result in aluminium oxide and iron. The resulted iron will be molted, so it will do a little damage to the hood, but the car will almost for sure run afterward, mostly likely only having visible blemishes.
The other problem is starting the reaction... You can't just drop it on the hood and expect it to start... ?
Someone did an experiment with 35g(7 times the weight of a quarter) of thermite once. Although it shot sparks all over, it did nothing to the dirt that it was in besides fuse some of the sand together...
The thermite reaction will create temperatures of approx. 3000° F., which is well over the 1200° F. melting point of aluminum, but not much over the 2800° F. melting point of iron. So, at best, they'd have a hole in their hood...
You'd probably have to go nuclear if you want to melt through 30 feet of dirt, and I don't think there are any acids strong enough to eat through 30 feet of dirt, although I could be wrong.
There, that's my science lesson for the day. ?
Originally posted by AdamBrill Yeah.. about that i meant to say a fifty-cent piece... but still a quarter would melt through the hood at least.

uhm.. yeah... it isnt an acid.. but you know what i meant. and you dont use aluminum powder. you use PURE aluminum fillings(like aluminum powder.. but higher quality.) and it takes one hell of a heat source to light it. a blow torch isnt even enough. you need a magnesium ribbon (you light it with a blowtorch.. then it heats up and lights the thermite). the heat from a magnesium ribbon alone is enough to melt through the hood of a car. then on top of that is the superheated thermite.

i know.. thats what the magnesium ribbon is for. ?
