@Sux0rZh_jc0rzNov 23.2003 — i think you did. you sexist pig. why can't a women have a job? I can cook easily enough if she wants a career. or vise versa. or we can both work.. although that'd kind of make some collisions in schedules..

@Paul_JrNov 23.2003 — Pah! The men do work their butt off, makin' the money, payin' the bills. And what do the women do? They just sit around and spend the money on their stupid 50 thousand pairs of shoes! Along with all the other stuff they feel the need to waste money on.

I hate suvs on car chassies also, that is another thing that ticks me off. But back to the original topic because my utter hatred for suvs is not for this thread.

We dont call them suvs over here but I am guessing you are talking about big four wheel drive vehicles and if so, lets form a hate club.

I drive up and down the motorway (=interstate) a couple of time a week and people in these vehicles are some of the worst, most inconsiderate and careless drivers I see, even putting aside the valid point about their impact on my visibility. I suspect this has something to do with the fact that they know in an accident with my small car their survival chances are higher. Unfortunately their safety is gained at the expense of everyone else unless everyone else also gets one too at which point the only people to gain are the car manufacturers and the oil producing countries.

It is like the prisoner's dilemma and another one of those occasions where I cant help but struggle against the market forces doctrine. I dont care if people buy them because they want them, they are evil, so ban the b*****s.

</end peculiar rant>
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@Lori9Nov 25.2003 — I COMPLETELY agree with the points made here...

Too many morons out there (mis)handle a 4-wheel drive vehicle with the mis-assumption that not only do they occupy a 9 X 7 foot area at any one time, but they OWN said roadway...

They don't adjust their driving technique based upon the altered center of balance, road conditions, rollover risk OR increased stopping distance necessary for safety. IT'S A NEW BALL-GAME folks-- and a 'wagon' classification on the reg. is by NO means carte blanche for idiocy behind the wheel...

And for &$#@'s sake, lose the cell phones...

OK I'm done

Gotta gas up my GMC Jimmy...

@PeOfEoNov 26.2003 — Wow, I have been saying this for, how long? I am soo happy I finally found some people who aggree with me! They are fule gluttonous suburban tanks that create such a demand for gassoline that it drives the price through the roof for all of us. Forget the war, forget anwar alaska. I say suvs are the cause of the energy problems and it is because of them it costs me $20 bucks to get half a tank to keep my car going for a few days. Now that we have found the problem how are we supposed to get people to stop driving them? I have an idea, since this is a webdeveloper forum, lets make a big website that tracks who drives SUVs, then once we have that data from sales records etc though car dealerships we could break all of their knee caps of all who purchase them! I guess that is just a stream of consiousness / wishful thinking ?
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@Sux0rZh_jc0rzNov 26.2003 — wishful thinking... but the kneecap part was truely riviting. but if you really wanna have fun how bout some "Donating of Thermite" to every owner of an suv... and let's donate it right on top of the hood... that way it the acid eats through the roof.. the engine... the axle... and their driveway... mayby hitting a gas line or two on it's way to the center of the earth..

(ok... thermite isnt strong enough to get to the center of the earth... but a quarter sized bit of it would definately go 30 ft down after eating through the car...)

Umm... yeah.

With 5 grams (approx. the weight of a quarter), you'd be lucky to eat through the hood, much less eating through the entire car and 30 ft. of dirt.

First of all, thermite is not an acid, so it won't "eat" through anything. It will probably melt through the hood, though. The thermite mixture normally used is aluminium powder and iron oxide. When thermite is heated, it starts a reaction that will result in aluminium oxide and iron. The resulted iron will be molted, so it will do a little damage to the hood, but the car will almost for sure run afterward, mostly likely only having visible blemishes.

The other problem is starting the reaction... You can't just drop it on the hood and expect it to start... ?

Someone did an experiment with 35g(7 times the weight of a quarter) of thermite once. Although it shot sparks all over, it did nothing to the dirt that it was in besides fuse some of the sand together...

The thermite reaction will create temperatures of approx. 3000° F., which is well over the 1200° F. melting point of aluminum, but not much over the 2800° F. melting point of iron. So, at best, they'd have a hole in their hood...

You'd probably have to go nuclear if you want to melt through 30 feet of dirt, and I don't think there are any acids strong enough to eat through 30 feet of dirt, although I could be wrong.

There, that's my science lesson for the day. ?

Yeah.. about that i meant to say a fifty-cent piece... but still a quarter would melt through the hood at least.

uhm.. yeah... it isnt an acid.. but you know what i meant. and you dont use aluminum powder. you use PURE aluminum fillings(like aluminum powder.. but higher quality.) and it takes one hell of a heat source to light it. a blow torch isnt even enough. you need a magnesium ribbon (you light it with a blowtorch.. then it heats up and lights the thermite). the heat from a magnesium ribbon alone is enough to melt through the hood of a car. then on top of that is the superheated thermite.

The other problem is starting the reaction... You can't just drop it on the hood and expect it to start... ?
i know.. thats what the magnesium ribbon is for. ?

a pile.. about the size of quarter.. i was exaggerating a ton for the dirt. but seriously if you make thermite right it will burn through the hood and the engine and the axle all the way to the pavement. I've done it b4 and it melted through the car=P

(dont ask as to if it was my car cause i wont tell you.)

also: i think there are some acids strong enough for it.. but they are the kind of acids that eat through inconel...(inconel stays clean in area's that corrode surgical stainless)..

for more information on thermite, go here:http://xaxei.europe.webmatrixhosting.net/default.aspx

(yes this is my website and my page and my makings..) to read more about thermite...

@Sux0rZh_jc0rzNov 28.2003 — hey adam, while we're on the subject... kinda... where would one find zinc powder? and how would one turn the sulfuric acid found in car batteries into sulfur powder?

(or do you know a better way of getting sulfur powder?)

just wondering cause i have to make a 10lb smoke bomb for my friend's concert, and i dont wanna pay 40$ for 6 lb's of potassium nitrate and then 5$ for 4 lbs of sugar.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@AdamBrillNov 28.2003 — Whether it can be done or not, I wouldn't suggest trying to melt through people's cars. Chances are, the owner won't like it very much and you might end up in jail. ? Of course, I am assuming(hoping) that you guys were kidding about all of this... ?

Anyway, about the smoke bomb, I would suggest that if you make a 10 lb. smoke bomb, you keep it a long ways away from your friends concert. It would be best to take it far away from all people and watch your creation do it's thing... that way no one will get hurt(or die from inhaling smoke). ? That's my suggestion, anyway... ?

This REALLY doesn't have much to do with Web Development anymore... Actually, it never really did. ?

Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@AdamBrillNov 29.2003 — Ok, Sux0rZh@jc0rz, now I'm curious. Did you really try burning through a car? You would need a tremendous amount of thermite to do that(far more than a fifty cent sized pile). If you tried setting a pound of it on the hood and lighting it, you might have a chance of at least seeing some of it come out the bottom(although it would probably just drip around it, not go through the engine). My guess is you never got it to go right through the car. ? My guess is at the most, it went through the hood and dripped past the engine onto the ground...
