@mityaNov 15.2009 — IE what?

Displays fine - and the same - in my IE8 and Opera 10.

@FangNov 15.2009 — Probably the miss-matched div tag

@JunkMaleNov 16.2009 — IE7 does not render websites properly.

I found this out with a site I set up for a friend and people with MSIE were emailing him asking where the site is as all they were seeing was a balnk page and the main body content about five minutes walk down the page.

So the answer is to urge IE7 users to update to MSIE 8 or use a real web browser...

My response was to push this in to the web page that only showed up if the browser was IE 7.
<!--[if IE 7]>
<div align="center" style="width:60%;">
<p><strong>Internet Explorer 7 detected.</strong><br>Please update to <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/ie"
target="blank">Internet Explorer 8</a> as Internet Explorer 7 does not render websites properly,<br>
alternatively you can view this site in other browsers like <a href="http://www.opera.com/" target="blank">
Opera</a> and <a href="www.mozilla.com/firefox/" target="blank">Mozilla Firefox</a> as normal.</p></div>
<![endif]-->
You can use this conditional in another way, to load in a CSS sheet that is specific to MSIE7, you would load up your CSS as normal and lastly, the MSIE 7 CSS sheet if found to be MSIE 7 which will overwrite previousl element settings where needed with MSIE 7 specific.

My stance on this was to push people to upgrade rather than waste effort and time in tweaking a CSS sheet that

a) wasn't my design to start with and

b) it was only one browser type that was a problem so I wasn't prepared to put the effort in to waggling the CSS loop Ariel to get a better picture.

So your choice is simply, educate people to the fact that MSIE 7 is not up to the job or to craft a CSS specifically for MSIE users.

@FangNov 17.2009 — IE7 will display sites correctly, if the design is broken then the webdeveloper is at fault.

Showing such a warning notice will only irritate uses and loose you customers.

Firstly my case it not as the CSS was not made by myself but part of a commercial skin released by a web developer. As the CSS for the site is showing up perfectly fine in IE 5, 5.5, 6 and 8 but not in IE7 and I was not about to get in to it with trouble shooting for "ONE" browser. They can either "UPGRADE" or use another browser.

Secondly, if you read my post, you will see that my actual suggestion is to use the IE7 conditional to "LOAD IN" a special CSS fix for IE7 after the main CSS loads that is known to work fine in all other browsers you can chuck at. Then if the browser happens to be MSIE 7, the additional CSS sheet specifically to cater for M$'s inadequate browser will run as the conditional code is only recognized by M$ and other browsers ignore it as it is just a comment block to them.

In the real world its a case of being able to justify the effort for the benefits. After consulting the web logs for site visitors, MSIE failed to even register 0.1% where Opera and Firefox were the most popular, MSIE for some reason is the least used browser to view the site, so I based my decision on the number of visitors that use MSIE7 to browse the site out of 100,000 visits this quarter. Seems that most people have upgraded or switched browsers.

You have to ask yourself if it is going to be worth if for such a small number of users and the argument about driving customers away does not seem to bother the hundreds of websites that block MSIE browsers outright! IMHO thats the same as unloading both barrels on both feet...

@criterion9Nov 17.2009 — Many people have upgraded to IE8 since it was pushed out to consumers through Windows Update recently. I do know that at work however, they blocked updates to IE8 and are still trying to use IE6. Given what JunkMale said about his usage reports I couldn't justify spending extra time fixing things for .1&#37; of my users (provided my .1% wasn't as large as say Google or Yahoo's .1%), but if my site was ecommerce based (or more commercial even) I would make every effort to make the site experience pleasant for as many users as possible.
