Why would using CSS in an external file be different from using CSS in the header?

I noticed that when changing my css from being in the <style> section of the header to a .css file, it looks differently. I’m not sure why this would be the case. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

@phi0xOct 07.2009 — are you linking the css file to your html file? That may be a 'stupid' question but some people sometimes forget even that step, not going to assume anything here.

try to take screenshots also if you could so it's easier for us to see what you are asking.

@M123authorOct 07.2009 — I was linking a CSS file... but not the right one. I must have copied and pasted and forgot the change the CSS file name.

Thanks for the help phi0x and opifex.
