Scrollbar Question

As an assignment for an interface class I am taking, I am required to design a web page for the elderly. Basically, this means larger text and click targets.

My question is wether or not anybody knows if it is possible to set the size of the scrollbar, the track, and/or the buttons. It doesn’t have to be a CSS solution, but I know that is what is used to edit the colors, which is why I’m posting here.

Any information I can get would be helpful, even if its just, “No, that’s not possible.”

@DaveSWNov 18.2003 — I don't think you can edit the size as such. You can edit colors, but that is only for Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5+.

You could use an alternate javascript scrollbar, which I can find you an example of if you wish, but since 13% of people have javascript disabled, you might be discriminating against more people then you're helping...

Ofcourse, you could just build two versions of your site, but that might be a little bit time consuming...

@VladdyNov 18.2003 — Scrollbar is part of UI interface and its size can be adjusted via UI (in Windows that would be Display Properties -> appearance). Therefore it is best for your web site to leave the scroll-bar alone - chances are it is already set by the user to his/her preference. Same goes for font size - leave it at 100% (1em) - so it defaults to the size user is comfortable with.

While it can be argued that most users do not know that they can or how to change the default browser font, you can add a simple javascript feature that will allow to adjust the font size from the page. See a possible interface solution at: http://devedge.netscape.com/central/javascript/
