Understanding the general concepts involved in programming in any language is the difficult part.

To Begin
I’m wanting to learn PHP. I’m the type of person who learns by putting things together. I tried to learn Javascript from w3schools and all I got out of it was that Javascript can be used to do math. As a result, I have no understanding of javascript. I learned CSS and HTML through school because they led us step through step in building example pages.
Are there any sites that can lead me step by step in making sample PHP applications starting from a beginner’s stand point?
Javascript too for that matter.
I don’t want to just copy and paste code into my pages and hope they work. I want to be able to write my own stuff so that I can guarantee it does exactly what I needed it for.
Also, to do PHP on my own computer, what applications will I need to test if I’m doing it right?
