How to have a specific directory be the root for all its subdirectories.

I figure this is probably more of an apache question but I couldnt’ see a section for that.

I have several sub ‘test’ sites running off of a single server. All these sites have root relative links within them. They all work fine of course when they are on their respective servers however when I upload them to my public test server the root is “lost.” What I would like to do is specify for individual directories what the root will actually be. I figured .htaccess should be able to do this but I was struggling to find info on it.

Any ideas?
