Question about reciprocal links

Hi,

I am trying to promote a company site. There are lots of business directories out there that you can add your details and website address. My question is if you add your website to these directories, is it better to also add that business directory to you own company site and also should you just add the business directory home page or the precise direcltry link to your details on it?
I think this is known as reciprocal links isnt it.

The other point is if you just have lost of directories pointing to your company’s site can this be bad for rankings according to Google?

@textboxAug 03.2009 — Yes, you are correct that this would be a reciprocal link. In the case of the directories I would not place a link back to them on your website. It lowers the value of the link, plus you don't want your visitors going to a business directory and possibly seeing your competition on the page.

Although you still get credit for a link when submitting to a directory, the value is usually quite small, however Google won't penalize your site for this.

@metal_royAug 11.2009 — Reciprocal links in 90% of the cases is not a good practice. In most of the cases the link comes from a page with no pagerank and you add a link to your page that has pagerank.

unless you are absolutelly sure of what you are doing, or unless you can exchange a link with a page that has much greater pagerank than you do, i would not recommend placing any links to these directories.

If you want more links to your site you can use a site submitter. BUT keep in mind that the best links (quality links) come from partnerships with other quality sites, not from unknown directories.
