Commenting for SEO

Hello,
1) I have just started commenting on other blogs or news sites to get links to my website. Now, I am doing this myself, didn’t hire anybody, and writing relevant comments all the time. However, I still link to my website, if possible to the specific relevant articles on my website, but if not possible to my main page. As I am writing relevant comments, is linking to my site okay, or is it considered spammy practice? Many blogs I comment this way are blogs or news sites I see for the first time…So, altough I am writing useful and relevant comments, will it be considered I am spamming by including a link to my website?

2) What other things should I keep in mind or any other advices for commenting?

Please answer #1 for sure, and if you have time, then #2…Thanks…

@JPnycJul 24.2009 — that's really up to the owner of the blog. If you go back and your comments have been removed, then you have your answer.

@textboxAug 02.2009 — When posting a comment on most blogs it is standard to submit your website url, but doing so in the comment field will surely get your submission removed. You should always remember to post in forums and on blogs for the sake of contributing information that is useful and not simply for links.

@ketancoauthorAug 03.2009 — i am saying "see a similar article" or "see a related story here" or something like that and give the link to that story, which is relevant indeed, in my website...I think I will still go with that route, and save the locations I commented on...Then check back after a while as jpnyc suggests...See what happens.

@metal_royAug 11.2009 — "Writing comments in order to get links and promote your site". I think that is the definition of the spam in comments :p It is very common pratice thought. Mainly it's up to the owner of the blog and his policy.

But keep in mind that 90% of the links in comments are nofollowed. So you get no Pagerank juice from Google.

@jamesmary009Aug 31.2009 — Hey its depends on the blog moderator and the comment you made.go back with the sites that you made comment and search for your comment,If you find your comment approved by moderator then there is a chance to get back link.Writing relavant comments on blogs is a better practice to get quality back links.

I have my own blog and I appreciate comments with links in the case these links are on topic of the article. If a link to a site doesn't belong to the topic I will delete a comment.
