Message board software reccomendations

I’ve a domain and message board site I want to throw up with minimal effort. I’ve used phpBB before and though it was OK. It was hacked through a javascript exploit although I’m sure that’s patched now. I wonder if the collective expertise here can save me the legwork and recommend something?

Any experience with, or info on features you like, would be appreciated.

@MindzaiJul 22.2009 — vBulletin has loads of features but it's not free and it's a bit of a beast too (in good and bad ways). I was never a fan of phpBB but I've heard the latest version is pretty good - and I think you're right, that exploit was patched out a while back.

@criterion9Jul 22.2009 — I have been using phpbb. I changed a bit of the code though since mine was a more custom situation. I haven't had any troubles with it (aside from figuring out what the spaghetti code is actually doing).

I'm not expecting a revenue from this site as it's just of a discussion of local issues. I am interested in using for a proving ground should I need a plugin board on another site.
