Something Wrong With My Meta Tags?

My site used to be the 7th result when you searched “hogwarts rpg” on Google. However, after I made the switch to XHTML, it disappeared. I found it by searching for my site specifically, but now Google doesn’t output the description meta tag, and I’m wondering if that’s why it disappeared from its good listing.

[code=html]<meta name=”description” content=”Set in a different universe than the Harry Potter series, Ultimate Hogwarts is family-friendly RPG with a plot that is unusual to most Hogwarts Role Playing Games.”/>
[/code]

Am I doing something wrong?

@maneetpuriJul 16.2009 — Hello Joseph

Hope you are well!

I checked your website home page cache in Google which is empty because you must have down your server during switch to XHTML and in the mean time Google crawler tried to crawl your website but did success, so just wait for few days and let the Crawlers do their job and as soon as your website recached by Google it will get its ranking back.

Cheers!

@tracknutJul 16.2009 — Joseph, when I run the validator on your code, one of the (many) errors it comes up with is a <div> that starts in your header block. I don't know if that's having an impact on Google's parsing your site, but you might clean that, and the other errors up.

@Joseph_WitchardauthorJul 18.2009 — Well, I would rather not remove the movie header until the movie is out of theaters (I'm guessing that's the one you were referring to?). I don't know how often this happens, but Fandango contacted me on their own and asked if they could advertise on my site. I felt a little honored, to be honest:o

@tracknutJul 18.2009 — I don't know if it's coming from the Fandango header or not (I would be honored too!), but this code:
</head>

<body>

<div style="margin: 20px auto; width: 728px; height: 90px;"><head>

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"/>

<title>Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince</title>

</head>

<body bgcolor="#ffffff">[/QUOTE]

is what I was referring to.

@Joseph_WitchardauthorJul 19.2009 — Yeah, I know that it's not standard XHTML. But surely someplace as big as Fandango wouldn't give out banner codes that breaks your site on Google?

@metal_royAug 11.2009 — I see no H1, or H2 that help a lot in SEO.

Metatags will not do so good. Meta keywords are not taken into account and meta description is not that important.

Work on your keyword density, check the keyword rank of the important keywords of your site and make sure you are optimized for these. You can check all these with a keyword analyzer.

Also work on the offpage parameters such as the anchor text of the incomming links. Make sure that the keywords that point to your site are optimized in your text.

@Joseph_WitchardauthorAug 11.2009 — Well, I've been planning on SEOing my site up better for awhile now, I have just not gotten around to it. Right now, I'm just concerned as to why my site vanished altogether all of the sudden from Google, when it had been #7 when searching the phrase "hogwarts rpg" for awhile.
