Subscript/Superscript Line Spacing

I’ve been using the and tags to put a few numbers and words into subscript or superscript (ie. in order to write CO2 properly).

The problem is that when I put the ‘2’ into subscipt, for example, it will increase the spacing between this line and the next very slightly. This spoils the appearances of the page.

Is there any way of either stopping this slight increase in line spacing, or increasing the line spacing of the rest of the page in order to match it?

Thanks.
