I need a simple cookie….

I am trying to create a simple cookie. Basically, a text box will ask “Please Enter A Username to sign up!” The text box will be followed by a submit button. The user will enter any random username and then click submit……

Then the purpose of the cookie will be to present a window that says “You have already signed up!” if someone enters the same username.

Can someone help me with this?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I have 2 books on Javascript and neither of them explain how to do this.
