htmlentities encoding problem

Hi, I`m currently developing bulgarian language website and I`m using utf8 encoding – it works fine.
But when I type something in bulgarian in forms and press the submit button, the text turns into strange hieroglyphs. After some test I realised that it`s because the htmlentities checking that I`m making before the submission.
Would it be unsafe if I don`t use htmlentities in the user submission form?

The third argument to htmlentities is a charset parameter. You can tell it to use UTF-8.

See http://us3.php.net/htmlentities
