Dynamically generated html with <script> tags

I’m using AJAX to dynamically modify the html of a page, and part of response text includes the tags <script>function_name(arg)</script>

Now this seems to work perfectly fine in Firefox – the script is executed right after the new html is added – but Chrome and IE don’t seem to like it.

Is there some inherent difference in how IE and Chrome handle javascript that prevents me from doing this, or do I just have a problem somewhere else, and for some reason it’s choosing to manifest in this particular way?
