jquery browser detect ie8 as ie6

We are using jquery within a site we currently have but are experiencing a few issues.

For some reason the browser/version detection on a lot of installations is detecting IE8 as IE6 which is causing huge issues especially on input fields with png backgrounds making the input unusable with the nature of javascript png fix’s.

Does anything know of any bugs either with IE8 or jquery of this nature. It seems to be more than 1 but not all IE8 installations but obviously we cant expect all the users of the site to resolve the issue client side.

@knowjauthorJun 22.2009 — Ended up using internet explorer conditional comments within the html. However this isn't ideal for this type of application.

I am still interested in hearing if anyone else is having/heard about this issue.

@CmoslimJul 13.2009 — I'm having the same issue, I've verified the user is using ie8 but they're still showing up as ie6 on 3 separate browser detection scripts. I'l try the conditional comments, but I haven't had much luck relying on those, otherwise this one has got me stumped. The only thing I've come up with is that an add-on may be moving things around as is the case in the following forum entry: http://techpatterns.com/forums/about1228.html

@Jeff_MottJul 14.2009 — Seems to work just fine for me. When browsing with IE 8, $.browser.version alerted "8.0".

@CmoslimJul 14.2009 — Apologies, I should have been more specific, the browser detectors I've been using are working fine detecting ie8, but one user is coming up as ie6 when I've verified they are using 8.
