Meta Tag Usage – How important is it?

Good afternoon one and all ?

Ok let me just start by saying that I am a relative newbie, not up to date at all and hoping to rectify both these flaws (heehee!) by starting afresh and building myself a brand spanking new and compliant website……hopefully!

The Question:
In relation to search engine rankings and descriptions and the like I am aware that it is recommended to use meta tags for keywords, description and such like.

With this in mind I was just wondering exactly what tags are best to use, and just how much data/information should be used to make it as SE friendly as possible.

I know that there are many possible tags available, but also understand that many of them are pointless or irrelevant, so as stated I would just like to know what the “Professionals” consider the best way to use meta tags.

Thanks a million in advance! (“,)

@bldstrJun 05.2009 — The page title is vital. It's probably the most important on-page tweak you can make for SEO. Try and keep it short, concise, get in your primary keywords but make sure it is user-friendly, too - this title will show in the SERPs as the summary title of your indexed pages and will make people click through. These keywords should also appear in your page copy somewhere. Make sure every single page in your site has a unique title. Avoiding duplicate content is the key here.

The Meta Description is quite important as this is what will be displayed as a summary of your site/page in the SERPs. Again, this should be failry short, concise and enticing and unique to every page. It's not vitally important to SEs though as if you don't have one Google will just use page copy if you don't have one. Sometimes it will even subsitue page copy in if you don't have any keywords in your description. This is more important for user CTR (click-through-rate) than to SEs, though it's better to use none at all than to have the same description on every page.

Meta Keywords are ignored by any SE that matters. If you are twiddling your thumbs one day and have absolutely nothing else to do then consider doing these. Otherwise they're a waste of time and add more code to the page. I often do one for the home page and then maybe for the important section home pages if I remember.
