onPaste – get the pasted data

OK so I have a textarea (prefer not to use a textarea if possible). when the user pastes some text into the textarea, how can I get access to the value of that pasted string?

I require both IE and Firefox and I guess I’d need to use netscape security manager (which is fine as this is an application and not an ordinary website) and Mozillas classes- which I have been messing around with but with no luck!
