Moving a website and retaining search rankings

I am going to be moving a website to a new domain. We will still own the old domain. I would like to know if anyone can tell me the best way to do this and keep our search engine rankings and listings. Should I forward the old domain to the new one, or use some sort of redirect. I’ve never tried anything like this before, so any input would be appreciated.

@yamaharussMay 07.2009 — Be careful with redirects. Done improperly could cause the engines to drop you. Best to just keep the old domain as an alias.

If the content remains identical then 301ing the old domain to the new one should go down OK.
