Requiring visitor information for downloads

Sorry if this is an old topic, but I am having no luck finding an answer.

I wish to place a PDF file on my server and would like to track web visitors who wish to download the file via a link on the web page. A simple email registration before file transfer would be fine, but if there are better ways I’m open.

Thanks to anyone who can help out!

@holyhttpApr 23.2009 — In my opinion, I you want to kill two birds with one stone a simple signup form where the user fill in first name and email address then the server-side script would redirect them to the PDF file. You can therefore build a mailing list and do the tracking.

Keep it simple and to the point. Focus on what the real purpose of offering the PDF download.

@cz67authorApr 23.2009 — Thanks for the reply, but perhaps I did not fully disclose my "newb"ness. I was actually hoping to be pointed towards an existing script that I could use, or some HTML code, or a step by step on how to set the whole thing up.
