@pyroNov 04.2003 — lol... ?

I find this ironic... Asking advice on how you can create your own style and be original? Wouldn't taking our suggestions mean you are using our styles? ?

Anyway, I'm assuming you are talking asthetics here, rather than coding. One's "style" really depends on their artistic ability. Basically, I'd recommend just paying attention as you surf the web. Find stuff that sticks out to you, stuff that you like. I know it is different for all of us, which is great, as we get more varity that way. Perhaps you would like to develope a style that is bleeding edge, developing very asthetically beautiful sites. Or, perhaps you prefer simpler sites, and would like your style to be a bit more simple, as often times, those can be the most appealing sites.

As far as coding style goes, be sure code to some standard, whether that be HTML 4.01 transitional, HTML 4.01 Strict, XHTML 1.1, or something else. Once you've written your code, run it through the HTML validator at http://validator.w3.org. Adam Gundry's signature on these forums says it so well, in a quote by accessibility expert Joe Clark:

If you’re not using valid HTML, then you haven’t created a Web page. You may have created something else, but it isn’t a Web page.
Also, keep a standard of accessibility in mind, whether it be Section 508 or the WAI.

@pyroNov 04.2003 — As I said, it depends a great deal on your artistic ability. What I do when creating a site is sit down with PSP 7 and make a mockup of the site. Generally, this mockup is very, very close to what the finished site ends up looking like. I find it much easier to get my thoughts for a site out doing it this way, than trying to program it at the same time. Once I have created the mockup, I then decide how I need to code the site. When you get to this point, it is very important to keep the semantics of you page in mind. Remember the (X)HTML is for markup -- each element should be marked up according to it's meaning in the page. A <h1> tag does not mean big test. It means a first level header. Once you have your paged marked up correctly, you can then begin to use CSS to style your document according to your mockup. Not sure what to tell you as far as developing an artistic style. I think it is a learning process. Some of the first sites I made looked hideous (and the code was in the same shape). But, learning is half the fun, right? ?

@spufiNov 05.2003 — And when in doubt, follow these three simple rules.

1. Experiment

2. Experiment

3. Experiment

?

No seriously, the times where I felt like I created the coolest image was when I went in Photoshop and just played around with stuff just to see what I could create. Most of the time I would have no clue as to how I did it, and I bet I couldn't recreate it. I would then take that image and base a design off of it even if this meant taking a already made layout and just adding the image to it and changing the colors to go with the image. I also have done this with HTML/CSS. I just start trying out stuff and seeing what I can come up with. One of the things I haven't really seen is just trying to be artistic with HTML/CSS and not using things like images to make things interesting. For us CSS fans, I thought this link was interesting showing what one can do with CSS.
