estimating project costs

So my last few projects the clients have wanted to price it based on a lump sum opposed to hourly. I can understand their incentive for wanting this. Some protection from the project taking longer or going into overtime.

Are there any benefits for the developer really? How should I be approaching an estimate? I figure working full time for X amount of weeks times hourly rate.

(X project hours) * (X hourly rate) = base project price

Is there anything else I should be considering?

@Declan1991Apr 11.2009 — Make sure you know exactly what they expect and what you will provide for that price. Do you just create what they tell you and that's it? What if they get a bright idea while you are developing and they want something that will take longer?

As with any contract it is absolutely vital that nobody will be disappointed at the end of the contract, so making sure they know what you will provide for what they are paying you is the most important thing. And a breakdown of why you think it will cost that much would probably be handy in helping to achieve that aim.
