key press event………Little bit Tuff

Hi, All coders,
I m new in this line …..
Please help me.
I m working on php.

I want a make key press event in form…………..
in simple words……….
In a text fields only character can enter nothing else,
in numeric fields only numbers can enter nothing else.
but I want to check this on key press event nor on form submission.

tell me in php or in java script in describe
