2 issues, spacing and compatibility with safari

Ok, I am taking over some sites that have been started and I am trying to figure out how to get the height of the main page to be less. There is a lot of coding in the html that is excessive, and I am having a hard time figuring out how to get rid of the empty gray space at the bottom of the page at:

Also, in Safari only, the right column with text does not line up at the top like I want it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
